Stochastic Attribute-Value Grammars
نویسنده
چکیده
Probabilistic analogues of regular and context-free grammars are wellknown in computational linguistics, and currently the subject of intensive research. To date, however, no satisfactory probabilistic analogue of attribute-value grammars has been proposed: previous attempts have failed to define a correct parameter-estimation algorithm. In the present paper, I define stochastic attribute-value grammars and give a correct algorithm for estimating their parameters. The estimation algorithm is adapted from Della Pietra, Della Pietra, and Lafferty [5]. To estimate model parameters, it is necessary to compute the expectations of certain functions under random fields. In the application discussed by Della Pietra, Della Pietra, and Lafferty (representing English orthographic constraints), Gibbs sampling can be used to estimate the needed expectations. The fact that attribute-value grammars generate constrained languages makes Gibbs sampling inapplicable, but I show how a variant of Gibbs sampling, the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, can be used instead.

Reversible Stochastic Attribute-Value Grammars
An attractive property of attribute-value grammars is their reversibility. Attribute-value grammars are usually coupled with separate statistical components for parse selection and fluency ranking. We propose reversible stochastic attribute-value grammars, in which a single statistical model is employed both for parse selection and fluency ranking.
متن کاملWide Coverage Parsing with Stochastic Attribute Value Grammars
Stochastic Attribute Value Grammars (SAVG) provide an attractive framework for syntactic analysis, because they allow the combination of linguistic sophistication with a principled treatment of ambiguity. The paper introduces a widecoverage SAVG for Dutch, known as Alpino, and we show how this SAVG can be efficiently applied, using a beam search algorithm to recover parses from a shared parse f...
متن کاملAn Optimized Parsing Algorithm Well Suited to RNA Folding
The application of stochastic context-free grammars to the determination of RNA foldings allows a simple description of the sub-class of sought secondary structures, but it needs efficient parsing algorithms. The more classic thermodynamic model of folding, popularized by Zuker under the framework of dynamic programming algorithms, allows an easy computation of foldings but its use is delicate ...

متن کاملUsing Attribute Grammars to Derive Eecient Functional Programs
Two mappings from attribute grammars to lazy functional programs are deened. One of these mappings is an eecient implementation of attribute grammars. The other mapping yields ineecient programs. It is shown how some transformations of functional programs may be better understood by viewing the programs as ineecient implementations of attribute grammars.
